Goldene Bar
The Goldene Bar sits on the eastern side of the Haus der Kunst, one floor above P1's basement, and functions as the museum's high-end drinking room. The name is literal. The ceiling is covered in gold leaf with painted scenes by Karl Knappe depicting cities around the world, and the overall effect is more Viennese coffee house than Munich club. The cocktail program runs under bartenders who have won national awards, and the drinks are built precisely with rare spirits, house syrups, and glassware selected for each recipe. The crowd skews older and wealthier than most Schwabing venues, mixing museum visitors, Munich's professional class, and tourists staying at the higher-end hotels nearby. The space stays open into the night but never becomes a club. Conversation is the dominant activity, and the music sits low. In summer, a large outdoor terrace opens onto the museum's eastern lawn, facing the Englischer Garten across the road, and the seating there is one of Munich's most pleasant warm-weather drinking spots.

Ask for the seasonal cocktail list rather than the standard menu; the rotating builds are where the bartenders do their most interesting work. The outdoor terrace in summer fills up by 19:00 on weekends, so arrive earlier or reserve. The bar serves breakfast and lunch from 10:00, which is one of the few ways to see the gold ceiling in daylight.

The Goldene Bar occupies a ground-floor space on the eastern side of the Haus der Kunst, originally opened in 1937 as part of the building's public program and restored in 2010 after decades of mixed use. The ceiling is the feature. Karl Knappe's gold-leaf murals depict cities around the world in a style that nods to Art Deco while remaining distinctively Munich. The floor is marble, the tables are heavy, and the bar along one wall holds a deep back bar stocked with rare spirits. The restoration preserved the original painted names of each city above the murals, which is a rare detail for a working bar.
The cocktail program earns the prices. Klaus St. Rainer, one of Germany's most recognized bartenders, built the foundation and his influence remains visible in the menu structure. Seasonal builds rotate quarterly and highlight local ingredients: elderflower in spring, stone fruit in summer, quince and pear in autumn, and warming spices in winter. Classic cocktails are executed correctly, and the spirits selection runs deep on rum, gin, and mezcal. Glassware is selected per recipe rather than standardized, and the ice is cut or spherical depending on the build. The kitchen sends out small plates that sit above standard bar food, with charcuterie and cheese boards sourced from regional producers.
Among Munich's high-end bars, the Goldene Bar competes with the Schumann's American Bar for reputation and usually wins on room alone. Schumann's has history and character; the Goldene Bar has the ceiling and the terrace. The hotel bars at the Bayerischer Hof and the Mandarin Oriental sit in the same price range but feel corporate by comparison. For a pre-dinner cocktail in a room that doubles as a reason to visit the neighborhood, the Goldene Bar has no equivalent. Service is professional and unrushed, which keeps table turns slow but the experience intact.
The summer terrace doubles the appeal. Tables spread across a lawn facing Prinzregentenstraße and the Englischer Garten beyond, and a warm evening makes it the best outdoor drinking in the center. Book ahead for Friday and Saturday evenings, especially in June and July when the weather draws crowds. Weekdays before 20:00 are easy walk-ins, and the daytime opening makes it one of the few cocktail rooms in Munich that works for a late lunch drink.

The Goldene Bar shares a building with the Haus der Kunst museum and P1 nightclub, giving the location a rare density of cultural and nightlife destinations in a single address. The Englischer Garten sits directly across Prinzregentenstraße, and the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum is next door. Schwabing proper begins a short walk north.
Getting There
U-Bahn U4 or U5 to Lehel, then a 10-minute walk north. Tram 100 and bus 100 stop at Haus der Kunst. Walking from Odeonsplatz takes around 15 minutes through the Hofgarten. Bike rental stations sit on the museum's southern side.
