Moonwalk Namba

Namba, Osaka

Moonwalk is a chain bar near Dotonbori where every cocktail costs 200 JPY. The business model is simple: serve basic cocktails at rock-bottom prices, pack the small standing-room space with customers, and rely on volume. The drinks are not craft cocktails. They're mixed quickly from standard spirits and pre-made mixers. But at 200 JPY per glass, roughly $1.30, nobody's complaining about complexity. The bar holds about 30 people standing, with a single counter and a narrow room. The crowd skews young and international, with tourists from nearby hotels making Moonwalk a popular first stop before more expensive venues. The menu lists dozens of cocktails by name, each 200 JPY. Beer is slightly more at 300 JPY. There's no cover charge, no table charge, and no minimum. You can walk in, drink one 200 JPY mojito, and leave. The atmosphere is cheerful and loud, fueled by the disbelief of customers who keep checking that the prices are real.

Full Review

The first question everyone asks at Moonwalk is whether the prices are real. They are. Every cocktail on the menu, from mojito to cosmopolitan to whisky sour, costs 200 JPY. That's about the price of a can of coffee from a vending machine.

The quality matches the price, which is to say it's basic. The mojito I ordered was more sweet lime soda with a splash of rum than a proper cocktail. The gin and tonic was gin and tonic, no more, no less. But at 200 JPY, the value calculation is straightforward. Three cocktails here cost less than one at most Tokyo bars.

The space is small and designed for maximum throughput. A narrow room with a bar counter along one wall and standing room fills the rest. On a Friday evening at 9 PM, about 25 people packed the space, creating a lively, if cramped, atmosphere. The crowd was international: Australian backpackers, Korean tourists, local Japanese students, and a couple of American servicemen.

The system is efficient. Walk in, order at the counter, pay immediately, drink while standing. No table numbers, no waiting for bills, no confusion. The staff work fast and seem accustomed to the constant stream of incredulous first-timers.

Five cocktails came to 1,000 JPY. That's not a typo. The total for five drinks, enough to build a solid foundation for a night out, was about $6.50. As a starting point for a Namba evening, Moonwalk is hard to beat on pure economics.
