Tachinomi Takioka has been written about in every Tokyo budget food guide, and for good reason: you can eat and drink here for an amount that wouldn't buy a single cocktail in Roppongi. But the experience is about more than just saving money. It's a window into a Tokyo drinking culture that's becoming rare.

The space is a rectangular room, maybe 4 meters wide and 8 meters deep, with a counter running along one wall. There are no chairs, no stools, no tables. You stand at the counter or find a spot along the opposite wall and balance your plate on a narrow ledge. During peak hours, you share counter space with strangers, your elbows touching as you eat.

I arrived at 3 PM on a Thursday and found a comfortable spot at the counter with only six other customers. A plate of potato salad (100 JPY), a portion of simmered beef tendon (200 JPY), and a chuhai (200 JPY) arrived within two minutes. The potato salad was basic but satisfying. The beef tendon was slow-cooked and genuinely delicious. The chuhai was strong.

By 5 PM the room had tripled in occupancy. Salarymen from nearby offices packed in, ordering rounds of chuhai and small plates. The noise level rose, the counter became a communal dining table, and the staff moved with the focused efficiency of people who've been doing this for decades.

My total bill for two chuhai, three food items, and a beer was 1,100 JPY. In central Tokyo, for a full meal and three drinks, that borders on unbelievable. The experience was worth more than the bill suggests.

The Neighborhood

Takioka sits near the entrance to Ameyoko market, between Ueno and Okachimachi stations. The surrounding streets are full of market stalls, cheap restaurants, and other standing bars.

JR Ueno Station's Shinobazu Exit, walk south toward Ameyoko market. Takioka is on the edge of the market, about a 3-minute walk.
