Full Review
Handlebar Poblacion is the kind of bar that exists because people love live music, not because someone saw a business opportunity. The walls are a collage of band posters, gig flyers, and stickers from Filipino and international acts. The stage is barely elevated, putting the performers at eye level with the audience. The sound system is functional, delivering enough volume for a room this size without distortion.
On a Saturday night, a four-piece band played a set covering everything from Rage Against the Machine to Parokya ni Edgar. The guitarist was technically impressive, and the vocalist had genuine stage presence. The crowd of about 50 people responded with energy, singing along to the OPM tracks and moshing gently during the heavier numbers.
Beer at 80 PHP and a cover of 150 PHP including a drink make this one of the cheapest nights out in the Poblacion area. The cocktails are basic but cold. Food is not the bar's strength, limited to some chips and nuts.
The crowd was 80 percent Filipino, mostly in their twenties, with a few older expats who seemed to be regulars. The atmosphere was welcoming and unpretentious. Nobody cared who you were or why you were there as long as you were into the music.
Handlebar Poblacion is the ideal warm-up spot before P. Burgos or a worthy destination on its own for anyone who prefers live bands over go-go bars. The Filipino live music scene deserves more attention than it gets, and this bar is a good introduction.
