Cocktail Works Ueno
Cocktail Works is a second-floor craft cocktail bar in Ueno that offers something the neighborhood largely lacks: properly made cocktails in a comfortable seated environment. The bar counter seats 12, with a few additional small tables by the window. The menu changes seasonally, featuring cocktails built around Japanese fruits, teas, and spirits. Standard options like gin and tonics and whisky sours are also available. Prices start at 900 JPY for classics and reach 1,400 JPY for the more elaborate seasonal creations. The bartender works with visible care, measuring precisely and garnishing each drink individually. The interior is modern and minimal: exposed concrete, warm wood tones, and soft lighting. The crowd is typically small, five to eight people on a weekday evening, and conversation tends toward quiet. It's a welcome contrast to the loud izakaya scene below on street level. English is not widely spoken, but the menu has descriptions and the bartender can demonstrate ingredients.

Full Review
Cocktail Works sits above a convenience store on a street near Ueno Station. A narrow staircase leads to a second-floor door that opens into a room so different from the street below it could be in another city.
The bar counter runs along one wall, with 12 high chairs providing front-row seats to the bartender's work. Three small tables line the window, offering views of the pedestrian traffic below. The decor is modern Japanese minimalism: concrete, wood, and glass, with a few carefully placed plants.
The seasonal menu on my visit featured a strawberry sake cocktail, a hojicha (roasted tea) old fashioned, and a shiso gin fizz. I started with the hojicha old fashioned, which was excellent: the roasted tea flavor added a smoky depth to the bourbon base that was unlike anything I'd had before. A second drink, a classic Negroni, was precisely balanced and served over a single large ice cube.
The bartender worked silently, with the focused precision that Japanese bartenders are known for. Each drink was measured, stirred or shaken for an exact count, and presented with quiet pride. The attention to detail extended to the ice, which was hand-cut from a large block.
Two cocktails came to 2,100 JPY. For the quality of the drinks and the comfort of the space, it was reasonable. The room held six people during my Tuesday visit, creating an intimate atmosphere that encouraged lingering. The contrast with the tachinomi bars a few blocks away was absolute: this was drinking as craft, not as fuel.
