Blok M Social House

Blok M, Jakarta

Blok M Social House is a newer bar and restaurant concept on a side street off Jalan Falatehan, opened in the post-pandemic wave of South Jakarta venue openings. The ground floor operates as a restaurant with a small bar counter, and the rooftop holds an open-air lounge with booth seating, shared tables, and a dedicated cocktail bar. Food leans toward Indonesian small plates and Western bar snacks. The cocktail program is more ambitious than most Blok M venues, with a house list of around twelve drinks plus standard classics. The crowd skews toward young Jakarta office workers, expats in their twenties and thirties, and creative-industry types from nearby Kebayoran Baru. This is not a ladies' companion venue and operates as a standard bar-restaurant with a normal dress-up-a-bit weekend register.

Insider Tip

Head straight to the rooftop; the ground floor is fine but the roof is the reason to come. Book a booth ahead on Friday and Saturday or you'll be standing at the bar. Ask about the rotating seasonal cocktail list; the house bartenders put together a new menu every few months and the new drinks are usually better than the classics.

Full Review

Blok M Social House is evidence that the neighborhood's post-pandemic restaurant and bar wave has brought genuinely new concepts rather than just rebranding older venues. The ground floor operates as a functional restaurant with a short bar, mostly used for pre-dinner drinks or for people waiting on a rooftop booth. The real venue is upstairs. A narrow staircase opens onto a rooftop deck covered by a mix of pergolas and fixed awnings, with the cocktail bar centered against one wall and booth and shared-table seating arranged around it.

I came on a Thursday night and the rooftop was maybe half full by 21:00, filling to capacity over the next hour. The crowd split roughly evenly between Indonesian young professionals, a cluster of expats who'd walked over from nearby offices, and a table of Japanese diners who'd clearly come for the food first. Service was efficient and the bartenders actually knew what they were doing, which matters more than it should in Jakarta cocktail bars. The house list included a pandan gin sour, a kaffir lime spritz, and a solid take on an old fashioned with cold-drip coffee bitters.

Food is small-plate format rather than proper dinner, which works for a bar of this size. The satay lilit and the grilled prawn toast were both well-executed. Prices sit below SCBD rooftop bars but above the older Blok M venues, reflecting the positioning as a step up for the neighborhood without chasing the Pantai Indah Kapuk crowd.

Compared to the broader Jakarta rooftop scene, Blok M Social House is not trying to be the highest or the most luxurious room. It's trying to be a good neighborhood cocktail bar with a roof. That it succeeds says something about the shift happening in Blok M over the last few years, where the older Falatehan strip is now sharing ground with a younger, more cocktail-focused generation of venues.

The Neighborhood

Blok M Social House is on a quiet side street off Jalan Falatehan in the Blok M commercial area of Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta. The neighborhood includes Blok M Plaza, M Bloc Space, and several of Jakarta's longest-running bar venues, with a post-2021 wave of newer cocktail bars and cafes opening in the surrounding streets.

MRT to Blok M BCA station, then a five-to-eight-minute walk depending on the exact side street. GoCar and Grab drop at the building directly; fares from Sudirman, Thamrin, or Menteng run 60000-100000 IDR. TransJakarta Corridor 1 also serves the Blok M terminal if you're coming from central Jakarta.
