Bar Champion

Kabukicho, Tokyo

Bar Champion is one of Golden Gai's more memorable stops, a boxing-themed bar that squeezes about eight bar stools into a space not much bigger than a walk-in closet. Every inch of wall space is covered with boxing gloves, championship belts, fight posters, and signed photographs. The owner is a boxing fanatic who keeps major fights playing on a small screen behind the bar and is happy to debate the merits of any fighter from any era. Drinks are straightforward: whisky highballs, beer, and shochu. No fancy cocktails, no food beyond small bar snacks. The cover charge is 500 JPY, which includes a small appetizer. The place gets full fast on weekend nights, and once eight people are inside, you're standing in the doorway. English conversation is possible; the owner has picked up decent English from years of serving foreign visitors. It's the kind of bar where strangers end up talking to each other because there's simply no room not to.

Full Review

Golden Gai is full of themed bars, but Bar Champion earns its place by being genuinely passionate rather than gimmicky. The owner doesn't just hang up boxing gloves for decoration; he can tell you the story behind every photograph on the wall and will happily replay classic fight rounds on his phone if you ask.

The space is classic Golden Gai: a narrow room on the second floor of one of the alley's wooden buildings, accessed by a steep staircase. Eight stools line a counter that serves as the bar. Behind it, the owner moves in a space roughly the size of a bathroom, pouring drinks and pulling bottles from shelves that reach the ceiling.

I visited on a Tuesday evening and was one of three customers. The owner poured generous whisky highballs and launched into a comparison of Japanese boxing gyms he'd visited. By the time a fourth customer arrived, we were all in the same conversation. That's the magic of these tiny bars; privacy doesn't exist and neither does loneliness.

The cover charge is a standard Golden Gai 500 JPY, and you get a small dish of edamame or mixed nuts with it. Drink prices are reasonable by Golden Gai standards. Three whisky highballs and the cover came to about 3,000 JPY for an hour of genuine entertainment. The owner's English is conversational, making this one of the more accessible bars in the alley for non-Japanese speakers.

The Neighborhood

Bar Champion sits on the second floor of one of Golden Gai's inner alleys. The six narrow lanes of Golden Gai contain over 200 bars, and Champion is toward the northeastern end. The area is walkable from the main Kabukicho strip in about 3 minutes.

Getting There

From Shinjuku Station East Exit, walk through Kabukicho northeast toward Golden Gai, about 8 minutes on foot. The bar is on the second floor of a building in the fourth alley from the main entrance.
