Mogambo
Mogambo has been a fixture of Roppongi's bar scene since the 1990s, surviving multiple waves of gentrification and club closures. Mogambo is the kind of bar that every nightlife district needs and few manage to keep alive. While clubs around it have opened and closed, rebranded and renovated, Mogambo has stayed roughly the same: a bar, some stools, a pool table, cheap drinks, and a welcome for anyone who walks in.
The space is modest. A bar runs along one wall with a dozen stools. A few tables fill the middle. The pool table takes up the back third of the room. Decorations are an accumulation of years rather than a design choice: stickers, photos, beer signs, and the occasional oddity left behind by a patron.
I dropped in on a Wednesday evening. Three regulars sat at the bar, all English-speaking expats who'd clearly been coming for a long time. The owner nodded hello and had a beer poured before I sat down. Within 15 minutes I was in a conversation about Tokyo rents, which turned into a pool game, which turned into a longer night than I'd planned.
The drinks are straightforward. Draft beer is reliable, highballs are strong, and the limited cocktail menu isn't worth exploring. At 500-600 JPY per drink, you can have a proper night out for under 3,000 JPY, which is nearly impossible at the clubs down the road.
On Friday nights the character changes. The room fills, the volume rises, and Mogambo becomes a genuine party. People squeeze in, the pool table gets competitive, and closing time arrives faster than expected. Even on busy nights, though, the vibe stays friendly. The owner maintains order with a calm efficiency that comes from decades of practice.

Mogambo is on one of the side streets west of Gaien-Higashi-dori, away from the main club strip. The surrounding streets have smaller bars, izakayas, and some hostess clubs.

Roppongi Station Exit 3, walk south past the main crossing, then turn right onto one of the side streets heading west. About a 4-minute walk.
