Cafe Bach

Yoshiwara, Tokyo

Cafe Bach is a Nihonzutsumi institution that has served hand-drip coffee since the 1960s, but after 5 PM the menu expands to include wine, beer, and whisky. The dual identity makes it a comfortable transition point for visitors heading to or from the Yoshiwara area. The interior is classic kissaten (Japanese coffee shop) style: dark wood furniture, lace curtains, and soft lighting. Seating is at tables for about 20 people, with a few counter spots at the bar. The coffee is made using a slow-drip method that produces a smooth, balanced cup for 500-700 JPY. In the evening, wine starts at 800 JPY by the glass and whisky at 700 JPY. The atmosphere is quiet and contemplative, a sharp contrast to the functional efficiency of the soapland district nearby. The owner is elderly and speaks Japanese only, but the service is gracious regardless of language. Cafe Bach is the kind of place that reminds you Japan has a deep coffee culture that predates the Starbucks invasion.

Full Review

Cafe Bach sits on a quiet street in Nihonzutsumi, about a 10-minute walk from Yoshiwara. The building is modest, with a small sign and a glass door that opens into a room that could be from any decade between 1960 and now.

The interior is unchanged from what must have been the original design: dark wood tables, upholstered chairs with lace antimacassars, a glass case displaying cakes and pastries, and a counter with a row of pour-over drip stations. The owner, an elderly man in a white shirt and apron, works behind the counter with a deliberation that suggests he's been making coffee this way for half a century.

I visited at 6 PM, transitioning from coffee hour to evening. The house blend arrived in a ceramic cup on a saucer, accompanied by a small cookie. The coffee was smooth, slightly acidic, with a clean finish that showed the quality of the beans and the precision of the drip method. At 600 JPY, it was arguably the best coffee I had in Tokyo.

A glass of red wine (800 JPY) followed, served in a proper wine glass. The selection was modest, four reds and four whites, all Japanese or French. The wine was decent, though the real reason to drink here is the atmosphere rather than the wine list.

The room held five people during my visit: two elderly Japanese men reading newspapers, a couple talking quietly, and me. Classical music played at a volume that was almost subliminal. Nobody was in a rush. The pace was meditative.

Coffee and a glass of wine came to 1,400 JPY. As a breathing space before or after the more intense experience of the nearby district, Cafe Bach is perfect.
